What is AI Segmentation?

AI segmentation automatically detects and separates anatomical structures like organs, bones, and tissues from CT or MRI scans. Instead of drawing each region by hand, AI models complete the task in seconds by recognizing patterns from thousands of expert-labeled images.

Built using deep learning – typically convolutional neural networks (CNNs) – these models are trained on large datasets of anonymized DICOM scans. Once trained, they can accurately segment new data, structure by structure.

This speeds up radiological analysis, surgical planning, and 3D model creation, while improving accuracy and team communication. In VR or AR, it enables clear, spatial understanding of complex anatomy.

How It Works

  1. Load Your DICOM Data into Medicalholodeck
    Load your CT or MRI dataset directly into the Medicalholodeck PC-VR application. Please note that due to limited performance, PC-VR is highly recommended. It will only work with limited capacity on standalone headsets.
  2. Select an AI Model
    Choose from available AI models – optimized for specific imaging types, such as brain MRI or chest CT.
  3. Run Segmentation
    Start the segmentation process – most results are generated in under one minute.
  4. Complete Anonymization
    Medicalholodeck will only segment fully anonymized data. No metadata will leave your computer. All data handling is HIPAA-compliant.
  5. Work with the Segmented Data
    Visualize and interact with the 3D model – hide or highlight structures, adjust colors, add annotations, and take measurements – all in real time.
